The Decoration & Design Building and the Cohen Design Centers honored 12 of the design industry’s most illustrious talents during the 10th Anniversary Stars of Design and Stars on the Rise Awards. The event was held at the Decoration & Design Building’s restaurant Upper Story by Charlie Palmer on the 14th floor during DDB Fall Market 2017.
This invitation-only event saw luminaries from the worlds of interior, landscape, product and graphic design, as well as art, photography and architecture recognizing and honoring their peers in an intimate ceremony. Established at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles more than 20 years ago, the Stars of Design Awards are among the industry’s most prestigious events. Recipients were selected for their contributions to and achievements in their respective fields: Lifetime Achievement, Interior Design, Architecture, Landscape Design, Product Design, Graphic Design, Art, Photography and Stars on the Rise.
This year’s winners included architect Lee F. Mindel; interior designer Victoria Hagan; architects Mark Ferguson and Oscar Shamamian; landscape architect Janice Parker; product designer Bec Brittain; graphic designer Jon Contino; fine artist Marc Dennis; photographer Nori Inoguchi; and interior designers Rajni Alex, Dani Arps and Virginia Tupker.

DDB Fall Market 2017, held on Wednesday, October 11th, 2017 and Thursday, October 12th, 2017, featured two information-filled days consisting of six Keynote events—including panelists such as Amy Astley, Brian Sawyer, Monique Gibson, Martha Stewart, Stephen Sills, Shawn Henderson, MoMA, The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, Whitney Robinson, Bunny Williams, Guy Regal, Sophie Donelson, Alexandra Angle, Amanda Lindroth, Bennett Leifer, Clinton Smith and Steve, Brooke and Charlie Giannetti—as well as 20 in-showroom programs, two Special Events, one Special Program, three Cocktail Receptions and 114 Open Houses.
This year’s Stars of Design and Stars on the Rise winners:
Lifetime Achievement—Lee F. Mindel
Architect Lee F. Mindel is principal of the New York-based SheltonMindel. The firm, which provides services in architecture, interiors and product design for residential and commercial clients, has received numerous awards, including 28 AIA architecture awards, seven Interior Design magazine Best of Year awards and recognition from Architectural Digest as one of the top 100 design firms of the last century. Mindel is an Interior Design Hall of Fame inductee, as well as a Dean of American Design.
Interior Design—Victoria Hagan
A graduate of the Parsons School of Design, Victoria Hagan launched her eponymous, New York City-based firm 25 years ago. Her projects have included a Central Park penthouse on the top floor of the Plaza Hotel and the official residence of the Vice President of the United States of America.
Architecture—Mark Ferguson and Oscar Shamamian
Mark Ferguson and Oscar Shamamian established Ferguson & Shamamian Architects, LLP, in 1988. Specializing in residential architecture, Ferguson and Shamamian have designed homes in New York City, Los Angeles, Greenwich, Connecticut and Martha’s Vineyard, among other locations. The firm’s work has been published in Architectural Digest, ELLE Decor, Vogue and VERANDA, among many other publications.
Landscape Design—Janice Parker
A winner of the 2012 National Palladio Award for Landscape Architecture, Janice Parker launched Janice Parker Landscape Architects in 1984. The Connecticut-based firm, which primarily works with clients in New York City, the Hamptons and the Sound, has had its work appear in The New York Times, Metropolitan Home and Vogue among others.
Product Design—Bec Brittain
Working primarily in centerpiece lighting, Bec Brittain served as design director for the Lindsey Adelman Studio before opening her own studio in 2011. Best known for the critically acclaimed SHY Light, Brittain works with top designers and architects on commercial and residential projects around the world.
Graphic Design—Jon Contino
A native New Yorker, Jon Contino is the founder and creative director of the Contino Brand, and co-founder and creative director of CXXVI Clothing Company. His designs, illustrations and typography have appeared on everything from magazine covers and national advertising campaigns to movie posters and food trucks.
Art—Marc Dennis
Born in Massachusetts and currently residing in Brooklyn, artist Marc Dennis’ hyper-realistic paintings are influenced by the works of the Southern European masters, and have been showcased in group and solo exhibitions across the country. His work can be found in private collections such as those belonging to Glenn and Amanda Fuhrman, Larry Gagosian and Nancy Rogers, among others.
Photography—Nori Inoguchi
Still life photographer Nori Inoguchi was born in Japan and educated in New York. His work focuses on fashion, cosmetics and electronics, and includes commissions from L’Oreal, Samsung and L.L. Bean, among many others. Inoguchi’s Studio Lx, located in the Financial District, opened in 2013.
Star on the Rise—Rajni Alex
Rajni Alex, founder and principal of Rajni Alex Interior Design, works on both commercial and residential projects. Alex works to create spaces rooted in her clients’ lifestyle and personality but influenced by her own aesthetic: intricate patterns and details, color and sculptural form.
Star on the Rise—Dani Arps
The designer of start-up spaces including Venmo and Gilt, Dani Arps, who works on both commercial and residential projects, creates spaces with an industrial yet eclectic feel. Her work has appeared in publications such as Essence and Business Insider. Additionally, Curbed Young Guns named Arps among the Class of 2016.
Star on the Rise—Virginia Tupker
Virginia Tupker launched Virginia Tupker Interiors after more than a decade as a magazine editor, covering homes for publications such as Vogue and House & Garden. Working on both residential and commercial high-end properties, Tupker’s first project was published in Vogue.

The Decoration & Design Building is located in Manhattan, on Third Avenue between 58th and 59th Streets, diagonally across from the flagship Bloomingdale’s department store.
